Your support helps Dance Africa:
- Reach nearly 3000 children each year during our educational school tour. The company has become a unique part of the curriculum in many schools. It is sometimes the only dance seen by students until we return again next year.
- Bring internationally renowned touring companies and master teachers to the university. These artists bring an invaluable wealth of information and a once-in-a-lifetime experience to university students and community members.
- Provide in-depth educational experiences for many schools. Company members taught the Liberian dance Fanga to Irving Elementary students for their annual music concert, and invited students from the Village School and Irving Elementary to perform at the university with the company.
- Donate performances to benefit concerts throughout the year. Dance Africa has aided such causes as Tariro, a non-profit organization supporting education for women and children in Zimbabwe, and ShelterCare here in Eugene.
Not sure your contribution will help? Consider this:
- $10 buys 100 cowrie shells to be sewn onto a costume.
- $25 purchases a traditional hand-woven basket from Zimbabwe for the dance Amajukwa.
- $50 helps buys fabric for costumes. Company members donate time and energy to turn reams of colorful fabric into traditional costumes.
- $200 buys a new djembe, a traditional West African hand drum, whose name means “everyone come together.”
- $250 underwrites a full performance at a local elementary school, where students will delight in the sights and sounds of the company.
- $500 helps us bring guest artists here to teach us new dances and rhythms. In January, Masankho Banda joined us for a week of learning and performances.
